My daughter brought her new boyfriend to our Fourth of July barbecue, but the moment I saw his face, I nearly dropped the tray and whispered to my husband, “We have to stop this before she finds out.”
Our Fourth of July barbecue had always been one of my favorite family traditions.
Every year, our backyard filled with relatives, neighbors, and far too much food. My husband spent hours at the grill, the kids played games on the lawn, and by sunset everyone gathered to watch the fireworks together.
This year felt even more special because our twenty-two-year-old daughter, Emily, called a few days beforehand and asked if she could bring someone.
“I finally met someone I really like,” she said. “I can’t wait for you and Dad to meet him.”
I was thrilled.
Emily had always been careful about relationships, so hearing that excitement in her voice made me believe this young man had to be someone special.
The barbecue was already in full swing when I heard the front gate open.
I picked up a tray of burgers and walked toward the backyard, smiling as I saw Emily holding hands with a tall young man.
Then he looked up, and my heart nearly stopped.
The tray slipped in my hands, and I barely managed to keep it from crashing onto the patio.
I immediately turned to my husband, who had just noticed him too.
The color drained from his face.
I leaned close enough that no one else could hear me and whispered,
“We have to stop this before she finds out.” ⬇️
