A Woman Humiliated My Daughter for Her Weight on a Crowded Plane — Minutes Later, She Regretted Every Word

Aboard a crowded aircraft, the woman beside my nine-year-old daughter said she should have been required to pay for two seats.

Allison, my daughter, had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was little. By nine, she wore a glucose monitor and was very knowledgeable about blood sugar regulation.

She also weighed more than some of her peers, something that had made her increasingly aware of her appearance.

After visiting my parents, we found ourselves unable to book seats together on the packed flight home.

Allison took an aisle seat while I sat in the aisle directly across from her, so we remained in view and reach, though she shared her row with strangers.

The woman in the middle seat seemed put out even before her seatmate, Allison, settled in.

This lady, older and thin, wore a mask of irritation.

As boarding continued, she directed her words at Allison: “Your mother should have bought you two tickets. You’re taking up more than one seat.”

Allison stayed silent.

She nodded slightly, focusing on her phone as she habitually toggled between a couple of menus with no real purpose.

She does this when she’s holding back emotion.

Right before the plane departed, I handed Allison a carton of apple juice, reminding her to use it if her monitor registered low blood sugar. With a gentle touch, I told her help was just across the aisle.

When the woman saw the drink, she looked to me and remarked,

“Well, maybe if you stopped giving her sugary drinks, your child wouldn’t be the size of three grown women.”

For an instant, I thought I misunderstood.

“She has diabetes,” I calmly said.

She rolled her eyes.

“There’s always some excuse. Back then, it was celery, endless Pilates classes, silence, and hard work. These days, it’s soft drinks and screen time. It’s a disgrace. An overweight child this young marks the decline of society.”

She continued, as Allison’s cheeks reddened and her tears brimming.

Just as I was about to stand, a flight attendant came over and placed a note on a folded napkin into the woman’s hands. ⬇️
