Southern Fried Peaches
Ingredients:
4 ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced into wedges
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
Vegetable oil for frying
Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
Directions:
Prepare the Peaches:
Peel and pit the peaches, then cut them into wedges. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
Prepare the Coating:
In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Mix well.
Prepare the Batter:
In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined.
Coat the Peaches:
Dip each peach wedge into the buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
Dredge the peach wedges in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating.
Heat the Oil:
In a large skillet or frying pan, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). To test the oil, drop a small pinch of the flour mixture into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.
Fry the Peaches:
Carefully place the coated peach wedges into the hot oil, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Drain and Serve:
Remove the fried peaches from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Serve Warm:
Serve the Southern fried peaches warm as a delicious dessert or a sweet treat.
