👩🍳 How to Make Soft Baked Cheesy Pretzel Dogs
1. Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy on top.
(If it doesn’t foam, the yeast is dead—start again.)
2. Mix the Dough
Add salt, melted butter, and 3 cups of the flour. Mix with a wooden spoon or dough hook.
Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
3. Let It Rise
Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise for 60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
4. Prep the Hot Dogs
While the dough rises, pat the hot dogs dry and wrap each one tightly with a mozzarella stick.
(You can slice open the hot dog lengthwise and tuck the cheese inside if preferred.)
5. Shape the Pretzel Dogs
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a long rope—about 18–20 inches long.
Wrap the dough rope around each cheese-wrapped hot dog, pinching all seams closed so no cheese leaks.
6. Baking Soda Bath
Bring 10 cups of water + ⅔ cup baking soda to a boil.
Using tongs, drop each pretzel dog into the water for 30 seconds.
This is what creates the classic soft pretzel texture.
Remove and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
7. Brush & Salt
Brush each pretzel dog with the beaten egg for shine.
Sprinkle with coarse salt.
8. Bake
Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12–15 minutes, or until deep golden brown.
9. Butter & Serve
Brush with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven for that irresistible sheen and extra flavor.
Serve warm and enjoy the melty cheese pull!
