Slow Cooker Cracker Barrel Fried Apples
Ingredients:
6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup apple juice or cider
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Directions:
Prepare the Apples:
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even slices. Place them into the slow cooker.
Make the Sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour. Stir until the mixture is well combined and starts to bubble.
Add Liquid:
Slowly add the apple juice or cider, stirring constantly. Continue to cook until the sauce has thickened slightly.
Combine and Cook:
Pour the sauce over the apples in the slow cooker. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours, or until the apples are tender and the sauce is thickened.
Add Lemon Juice:
About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the lemon juice and vanilla extract, if using. Adjust sweetness to taste, adding more sugar if needed.
Serve:
Serve the apples warm as a side dish, dessert, or topping for pancakes, waffles, or ice cream. They can be kept warm in the slow cooker on the “Keep Warm” setting if serving immediately.
