🛒 Ingredients
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
-
1 yellow onion, diced
-
¾ cup tomato sauce
-
2 tablespoons ketchup
-
1 tablespoon mustard
-
½ teaspoon garlic powder
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon black pepper
-
8 slices Texas toast or thick sandwich bread
-
2 tablespoons butter (softened)
-
1½–2 cups shredded cheddar or American cheese
🔥 Step 1: Make the Sloppy Joe Filling
-
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until browned and softened.
-
Drain excess grease if needed.
-
Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Simmer 5–7 minutes until thick and saucy.
The mixture should be thick enough to sit on bread without running everywhere.
🧀 Step 2: Assemble the Sandwiches
-
Butter one side of each bread slice.
-
Place 4 slices butter-side down in a skillet or on a flat surface.
-
Add a layer of cheese.
-
Spoon sloppy joe mixture evenly on top.
-
Add another layer of cheese (this helps seal it).
-
Top with remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
🍳 Step 3: Grill to Golden Perfection
-
Heat skillet over medium-low heat.
-
Cook sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
-
Press gently with a spatula while cooking.
-
Flip carefully — the filling will be hot!
Cook until cheese is fully melted and bread is beautifully crisp.
