Sausage, Gravy, and Biscuit Pie
Ingredients:
For the Filling:
1 pound breakfast sausage (bulk or casings removed)
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a bit of heat)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
For the Biscuit Crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
3/4 cup buttermilk
Directions:
Prepare the Biscuit Dough:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the buttermilk until just combined. Do not overmix. Set aside.
Cook the Sausage and Make the Gravy:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until browned and cooked through (about 5-7 minutes).
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to coat. Cook for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens (about 5 minutes).
If desired, stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and well combined.
Assemble the Pie:
In a greased pie dish, pour the sausage gravy mixture evenly into the bottom.
Using your hands or a rolling pin, roll out the biscuit dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds or strips to fit the top of the pie dish.
Arrange the biscuit pieces over the sausage gravy, leaving some gaps for steam to escape.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
Serve:
Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm, garnished with chopped fresh parsley or chives if desired.
