500 g ground beef
-
½ cup breadcrumbs
-
1 egg
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
1 teaspoon garlic powder
-
½ teaspoon onion powder
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Onion Gravy
-
2 tablespoons butter or oil
-
1 large onion, sliced
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
-
½ teaspoon thyme (optional but delicious)
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
Optional: 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
🍳 Directions
Step 1 — Make the Steak Mixture
In a large bowl, combine:
-
ground beef
-
breadcrumbs
-
egg
-
Worcestershire
-
garlic powder
-
onion powder
-
salt and pepper
Mix gently with your hands until just combined (don’t overmix).
Step 2 — Shape the Patties
Form the mixture into 4–6 oval patties, pressing them slightly flat.
Step 3 — Brown the Patties
Heat a drizzle of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the patties and cook 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
They do not need to be fully cooked yet.
Remove and set aside.
Step 4 — Cook the Onions
In the same skillet, add butter or oil.
Add sliced onions (and mushrooms if using) and cook 6–8 minutes until softened and lightly golden.
Step 5 — Build the Gravy
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
Simmer until the gravy thickens slightly.
Step 6 — Return the Patties
Add the browned Salisbury steaks back into the skillet.
Spoon gravy over the top.
Reduce heat to low and cover.
Simmer 15–20 minutes until patties are fully cooked and gravy is rich and thick.
Step 7 — Serve
Serve hot over:
✔ mashed potatoes
✔ rice
✔ buttered noodles
✔ or roasted veggies
Spoon extra onion gravy over everything!
