Pioneer Woman Sausage Gravy
Ingredients:
1 lb breakfast sausage (mild, hot, or your preference)
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 to 3 cups whole milk
Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional: 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Directions:
Cook the Sausage:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the sausage and break it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
Cook the sausage until it’s browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes.
Add Flour:
Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage.
Stir the flour into the sausage, making sure it absorbs the fat and coats the sausage pieces.
Cook the flour and sausage mixture for about 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to cook and lose its raw taste.
Add Milk:
Slowly pour in 2 1/2 cups of milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
Stir until the mixture begins to thicken. If the gravy is too thick, add the remaining 1/2 cup of milk to reach your desired consistency.
Season the Gravy:
Add salt and black pepper to taste.
If you want a bit of heat, add the crushed red pepper flakes at this stage.
Continue to cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it reaches your preferred thickness, about 5-7 minutes.
Serve:
Serve the sausage gravy hot over freshly baked biscuits.
Storage:
Leftover gravy can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of milk if needed to loosen the gravy.
