Philly Cheesesteak-Style Sloppy Joe

Philly Cheesesteak-Style Sloppy Joe

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, diced
1 large green bell pepper, diced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese, if preferred)
4 hamburger buns
1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns, optional)

Instructions:
1. Cook the Beef:
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
2. Sauté Vegetables:
Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using) to the skillet with the beef. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
3. Add Garlic and Seasonings:
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, tomato paste, dried oregano, and dried thyme. Stir well to combine.
Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Prepare the Cheese:
While the filling simmers, lightly butter the hamburger buns and toast them in a separate pan or under the broiler until golden brown, if desired.
5. Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
Spoon the Philly cheesesteak filling onto the toasted buns.
Top each sandwich with a slice of provolone cheese. You can either serve it open-faced with the cheese melted under the broiler or cover with the top bun and let the residual heat melt the cheese.
6. Serve:
Serve the Philly Cheesesteak-Style Sloppy Joes warm. You can garnish with additional sautéed onions, peppers, or mushrooms if desired.
