Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe
Ingredients:
For the Sloppy Joes:
1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, to thicken)
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Cheese Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 ½ cups provolone or cheddar cheese, shredded
To Serve:
4 hoagie rolls or burger buns, toasted
Optional: sautéed mushrooms, extra cheese, or pickles
Directions:
Cook the Ground Beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
Sauté the Vegetables:
Add the chopped onions, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for 3-5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.
Add the Seasonings:
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, ketchup, and brown sugar. Mix well and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes to thicken, stirring occasionally. For a thicker sauce, add the cornstarch mixed with a little water to the skillet and simmer for an additional 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
While the sloppy joe mixture is simmering, melt butter in a separate small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until bubbly. Slowly whisk in the milk, then continue to cook for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheese until melted and smooth.
Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
Toast the hoagie rolls or buns in the oven or on a skillet. Spoon the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns, then drizzle the warm cheese sauce over the top.
Serve:
Serve immediately with extra cheese, sautéed mushrooms, or pickles if desired. Enjoy this twist on the classic sloppy joe!
