Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast
Ingredients:
For the French Toast:
1 loaf (16 oz) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
For the Topping:
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for caramelizing)
Fresh berries (optional, for garnish)
Whipped cream (optional, for serving)
Directions:
Prepare the Baking Dish:
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
Assemble the French Toast:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Add the cubed bread to the mixture and gently fold to combine, ensuring all the bread is coated. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours).
Preheat the Oven:
In the morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the French Toast:
Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 10-15 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
Caramelize the Sugar:
Once baked, remove the dish from the oven. Evenly sprinkle the granulated sugar over the top of the French toast. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy, golden crust. If you don’t have a torch, you can place the dish under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, keeping a close eye to avoid burning.
Serve:
Allow the crème brûlée French toast to cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh berries and whipped cream, if desired.
