My widowed mom showed up at family dinner wearing a wedding dress just a few weeks after her husband’s passing — when I asked her about it, she replied, “I need you to come with me.”
Not long ago, my father passed away.
My parents had been together for more than forty years. They’d shared nearly everything, so seeing Mom alone without Dad was difficult.
She was devastated.
During those first weeks, she was a different person. She didn’t care about anything, stopped visiting friends, and going through daily routines was a struggle.
I went to see her several times each week, but the thought of her being alone in the silent house was hard to bear.
To help, my husband and I began having her over for dinner on Saturdays.
Initially, she said little, barely ate, and left soon. With time, however, she started chuckling at my husband’s remarks, stayed longer, asked about our days, and even brought her own baked treats on occasion.
It finally felt like my mother was beginning to return to herself.
One Saturday, while I was preparing the table, I heard the door open.
“Mom, we’re in the dining room!” I said.
She entered, and I almost dropped the plates.
She was wearing a wedding dress.
An actual wedding dress.
I could only stare, trying to make sense of it. We had only just said goodbye to Dad, and now she was dressed like a bride in my dining room.
“Mom… what’s going on?”
She didn’t respond at once.
She walked over, took the plates, placed them on the table, and looked at me, reaching for my hand.
“I need you to come with me.”
