My mother-in-law stayed over for a week, and she started acting as though our house belonged to her by the second day. She frequently reminded us, “I’ve raised children before. You two worry too much.” Whenever I asked her to consult us before making decisions about our eight-year-old daughter, she would only reply with a smile, “Relax, I’m only trying to help.” I felt uneasy, but my husband kept saying, “Just a few more days. Let’s not argue.”
One afternoon, while my husband was at work, I went out to the grocery store and was gone for less than an hour. When I came home, I saw my daughter sitting on the couch in tears, covering her head with a blanket. My heart sank the moment I moved the blanket. Her beautiful long hair had been hacked into an uneven bob, hair sticking out everywhere.
I faced my mother-in-law and asked, “Please tell me you didn’t do this.” She didn’t look the least bit guilty. She only shrugged and said, “She needed a haircut anyway. You were taking forever to do it, so I handled it myself.” My daughter hugged me tightly and whispered, “Grandma said you’d thank her later.”
When my husband returned home that evening, he was just as shocked. “Mom, what were you thinking?” he said. She rolled her eyes and laughed, replying, “Honestly, both of you are acting like I shaved her head. It’ll grow back.” She refused to apologize, spending the evening pretending we were overreacting.
Later that night, she said she was tired, wished everyone goodnight, and went to the guest room. My husband soon fell asleep, exhausted from work, but I couldn’t rest. Every glance at my daughter sleeping soundly reminded me of her feeling betrayed.
When the house was finally quiet, I walked down the hallway, carefully opened the guest room door, and stepped inside.⬇️
