My mother-in-law said loudly that I “ate too much for the beach” and laughed with others, but by sunset, she was the one yelling, “How could you do this to me?!”

Dylan, my husband, arranged for a week with his family at the beach. I genuinely thought it would be a time to unwind.

Instead, it turned to humiliation for me.

Our son was just eight months old, and I still had post-baby weight. I was self-conscious about wearing a swimsuit and nearly didn’t go.

Diane, my mother-in-law, never hid her lack of affection for me completely; it was usually disguised as polite gestures.

That ended immediately.

At breakfast, Diane looked over my serving, smiled kindly, and proclaimed to the room,

“Well, honey, looks like you ate too much for the beach today!”

There was silence, then laughter.

Though I smiled, Diane spent the vacation making remarks about my weight and saying some mothers “bounced back” while others didn’t.

Dylan’s silence was even harder to take.

He just kept his eyes away while everyone else laughed.

After four days, it became clear Diane wouldn’t stop.

No arguments or insults came from my side.

I simply no longer shielded the person who spent days putting me down.

That evening, as all gathered for the annual family photo, Diane came running out, her cheeks red. She pointed at me and yelled,

“How could you do this to me?!” ⬇️
