My husband required me to sleep in our car nightly due to my pregnancy keeping him awake—when his mother found out, she made sure he received an unforgettable lesson.
I am thirty-four weeks along. My back hurts all the time. My ribs are sore from the baby’s feet pressing against them all night. I wake hourly needing the bathroom.
I toss, adjust my pillows, sit up, lie down again. The routine repeats.
Ryan and I live in a single-bedroom apartment.
One night, about three in the morning, Ryan abruptly sat up.
“I can’t live like this anymore.”
“I’m sorry. It’s not on purpose,” I whispered.
He glared at me.
“Then go sleep somewhere else.”
My car keys landed on the bed with a thud.
“You can recline the car seat.”
I just stared.
“Ryan… I’m eight months pregnant.”
“So what? I pay the rent here,” he answered. “I need rest for my job. You’re on maternity leave. Sleeping in the car for a while isn’t unreasonable.”
I hoped he’d change by morning.
He did not.
Routine set in.
Each night, I carried my pregnancy pillow down three flights and settled in the back seat.
At 6:30, Ryan would message:
“You can come upstairs now.”
Last Friday changed it all.
At 2 a.m., headlights lit up the lot.
A silver SUV parked next to me.
There was a knock at my window.
It was my mother-in-law, in a robe and looking pale.
“I came because Ryan wasn’t picking up. I worried something happened. Why are you here?” she asked, distressed.
I cried and explained.
She murmured,
“Oh my God… I can’t believe I raised a son like this.”
She returned to her SUV, coming back fifteen minutes later carrying a wrapped brown-paper package.
“Come with me,” she said softly. “You need to see this.”
Ryan opened the door, greeting her with a smile.
“Mom?”
The package was handed to him.
He tore away the paper. His smile vanished.
He dropped the package.
“Mom…” he said, moving back.
“What the hell? You can’t do this!” ⬇️
