My grandchildren asked me not to wear a swimsuit… for a moment, I almost agreed.
I chuckled at first, thinking they were being funny.
My eldest granddaughter then quietly said,
“Grandma… people are going to stare.”
The atmosphere shifted. No one offered reassurance.
I smiled, folded the swimsuit, and tucked it away in my suitcase.
Behind that smile…
those words cut deeper than I cared to admit.
I had spent years learning to accept my body. Every wrinkle, mark, and soft section was part of my story.
Still…
When we arrived at the beach, I caught myself staring in the hotel bathroom mirror, questioning if they might be right.
Maybe I was making them uncomfortable. Maybe bikinis weren’t right for grandmothers.
I nearly swapped for a cover-up. Almost did.
A promise resurfaced—the one I made after my husband was gone.
That aging would not stop me from enjoying life.
Taking a slow breath…
I stepped onto the sand in my swimsuit.
I sensed my grandchildren following my every move.
I braced for whispers. For stares. For judgment.
Nearby, a man murmured to his wife. They both looked over.
My heart dropped.
I lowered my eyes to my swimsuit, wishing I hadn’t worn it.
But then…
the man stood, heading my way.
For an anxious moment, I feared he’d voice what my grandchildren had suspected.
One of them softly whispered,
“I told you…”
He stopped in front of us. Facing my grandchildren…
…he spoke words we would not soon forget. ⬇️
