My boss planned our company retreat at a water park, sure I’d be too mortified to attend — but he hadn’t anticipated my reaction.
Twelve years of taking on neglected reports had shown me that Greg only targeted me with his barbs when an audience was guaranteed. He relished undermining me during Monday meetings, finding ways to wear down my confidence with sly comments.
“Linda,” Greg said at our last briefing, leaning back with a satisfied grin. “You’ll be at the retreat, right? It’s at a water park this year. Attendance is mandatory. Real team players don’t hide.”
A few coworkers focused on the table. Greg’s remarks about my appearance, my speed, or how certain people “aren’t built for summer events” were thinly veiled, but everyone got the message—even as they pretended not to.
For two weeks, I considered skipping it, dreading the prospect of his orchestrated humiliation.
That morning at the park, I sat in my car until my coffee grew cold. Greg hoped I’d stay away and lose my job.
I left the car.
Greg was at the main lockers, surrounded by many from the team, holding drinks. Spotting me walk in, his face showed genuine disbelief.
“Well,” he boomed, making sure no one missed it, “Linda, I’ll admit I didn’t think you’d actually show up today.”
Nervous laughter rippled through the group.
Saying nothing, I calmly walked to the pool’s small platform, picked up the microphone, and addressed the group.
And what unfolded meant Greg could no longer meet my gaze. ⬇️
