Homemade Mac and Cheese Casserole
Ingredients:
For the Mac and Cheese:
16 ounces elbow macaroni
4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
4 cups milk (preferably whole milk)
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon mustard powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
For the Topping:
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
Directions:
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the Macaroni:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente.
Drain and set aside.
Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly and starts to turn golden.
Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps.
Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble.
Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combine Macaroni and Cheese Sauce:
Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well combined.
Assemble the Casserole:
Transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Prepare the Topping:
In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, melted butter, and dried parsley (if using).
Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the mac and cheese.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
Serve:
Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving.
