Homemade Lasagna

Ingredients:
12 lasagna noodles
1 pound ground beef
1 pound Italian sausage
1 medium onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (15 oz each) tomato sauce
1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups ricotta cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)

Directions:
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the Noodles:
Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and lay them flat on a baking sheet to cool.
Prepare the Meat Sauce:
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, and garlic over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Add the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Mix the Ricotta Filling:
In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and egg until smooth. Set aside.
Assemble the Lasagna:
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Lay 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese over the ricotta mixture.
Repeat layers, ending with a layer of meat sauce topped with the remaining mozzarella cheese.
Bake:
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
Cool and Serve:
Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
