Homemade Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
1/4 cup olive oil
1 large egg
For the Filling:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 pound Italian sausage, removed from casing and crumbled
1/2 pound pepperoni, sliced
1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
For the Tomato Sauce:
1 can (14.5 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Toppings:
Fresh basil leaves
Red pepper flakes
Directions:
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, and sugar.
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Add the yeast mixture, olive oil, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
In a medium bowl, combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
Prepare the Filling:
In a skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the crumbled sausage and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Add the bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms to the skillet and cook until softened. Remove from heat and set aside.
Assemble the Pizza:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two parts, one slightly larger than the other. Roll out the larger portion of dough on a floured surface to fit a deep-dish pizza pan (about 14 inches).
Transfer the rolled-out dough to the pizza pan, pressing it up the sides and making sure it covers the bottom and sides evenly.
Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese over the bottom of the dough.
Layer the cooked sausage, peppers, onions, and mushrooms on top of the cheese.
Add the sliced pepperoni on top of the vegetables.
Pour the tomato sauce over the filling, spreading it evenly.
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese over the top.
Bake the Pizza:
Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil and red pepper flakes if desired.
Serve:
Slice the pizza and serve warm. Enjoy the rich, cheesy layers of your homemade Chicago-style deep-dish pizza!
