Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, diced onions, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval or round patties.

Cook the Hamburger Steaks:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Prepare the Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are softened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a boil.
In a small bowl, whisk together the flour with a little water to create a slurry. Slowly add the slurry to the skillet, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes to heat through.
