Greek Steak Pitas with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms
Ingredients:
1 lb steak (sirloin or flank), thinly sliced
2 tbsp olive oil, divided
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 large onion, thinly sliced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp garlic powder
4 pita breads (warmed)
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/2 cup tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions:
Cook the steak:
Season the thinly sliced steak with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
Caramelize the onions:
In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
Cook the mushrooms:
Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the caramelized onions. Season with oregano and garlic powder. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and any liquid has evaporated.
Assemble the pitas:
Warm the pita breads and spread a layer of tzatziki sauce on each one. Top with the cooked steak, caramelized onions, and mushrooms. Sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese and chopped parsley, if desired.
Serve:
Fold the pitas and enjoy your Greek Steak Pitas with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms warm. They pair well with a side salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
