French Onion Soup Burgers

French Onion Soup Burgers

Ingredients:
For the Onion Topping:
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup beef broth
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Burgers:
1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
4 brioche buns
Optional Toppings:
Mayonnaise
Dijon or whole-grain mustard
Fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish

Instructions:
1. Caramelize the Onions:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat, then add the butter and olive oil.
Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Add the sugar and continue to cook for another 10–15 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
Pour in the beef broth to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits. Let it cook down until the broth is absorbed. Season with salt and pepper to taste and set aside.
2. Make the Burgers:
Season the ground beef with salt and pepper and form into 4 patties.
Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes on each side (or to your desired doneness).
Add a slice of cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking, covering the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese.
3. Assemble the Burgers:
Toast the buns, if desired. Spread mayonnaise and mustard on the bottom bun.
Place the cheeseburger patty on the bun, then top generously with the caramelized onions.
Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if you like, then top with the other half of the bun.
