French Onion Soup Burgers
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 preferred)
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup beef broth
1 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
4 brioche buns, toasted
1/4 cup mayonnaise
Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, or arugula
Directions:
Caramelize the Onions:
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil.
Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes, until the onions are soft, golden, and caramelized.
Add the minced garlic and thyme, and cook for another 2 minutes.
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, and let the mixture simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 5-7 minutes.
Set the onion mixture aside.
Prepare the Burger Patties:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, and 1 tbsp of the prepared onion mixture (cooled).
Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
Cook the Burgers:
Preheat a grill or large skillet over medium-high heat.
Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until desired doneness.
In the last 2 minutes of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère or Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the pan or grill to melt the cheese.
Assemble the Burgers:
Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the toasted brioche buns.
Place the burger patties on the bottom bun, then top with a generous portion of the caramelized onion mixture.
Add any optional toppings like sautéed mushrooms or fresh arugula.
Cover with the top bun and serve.
