🥪🧀 French Dip Grilled Cheese
A rich, melty twist on the classic French dip—this grilled cheese is stuffed with tender roast beef, gooey Swiss, and toasted golden bread. Serve with warm au jus for the ultimate dip-worthy comfort sandwich!
What You’ll Need
For the Sandwiches
-
8 slices crusty French bread
-
8 slices Swiss cheese
-
12 ounces thinly sliced roast beef
-
2 tablespoons butter, softened
-
Optional: caramelized onions for extra flavor
For the Au Jus
-
1 cup beef broth
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
½ teaspoon garlic powder
-
½ teaspoon onion powder
-
Salt & pepper to taste
Directions
1. Prepare the Au Jus
In a small saucepan, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Simmer over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, then reduce heat to low to keep warm.
2. Preheat Your Skillet
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
A steady, even heat ensures the bread gets golden without burning.
3. Butter the Bread
Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of French bread.
These will be the outsides of your grilled cheese sandwiches.
4. Assemble the Sandwiches
On the unbuttered side:
-
Add 1 slice of Swiss cheese
-
Layer roast beef generously
-
Add another slice of Swiss
Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing outward.
5. Grill the Sandwiches
Place each sandwich onto the skillet.
Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
6. Rest and Slice
Remove from heat and let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute.
This keeps everything melted but prevents ingredients from sliding out.
7. Serve With Au Jus
Slice the sandwiches in half and serve immediately with a small bowl of warm au jus for dipping.
The melty cheese + salty beef + rich dipping broth = perfection.
