French Butter Cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Optional: 1/4 cup sprinkles or coarse sugar for decoration
Directions:
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
Cream Butter and Sugar:
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer or a stand mixer with the paddle attachment.
Add Egg and Vanilla:
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
Form Cookies:
Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of dough and roll them into balls. Place them onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Gently flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass or your hand. If desired, sprinkle the tops with sprinkles or coarse sugar.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may still look slightly soft.
Cool:
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
