Every Sunday, my daughter would set a painted rock on her late father’s grave — until one morning, every rock had disappeared, save for one that concealed a tiny brass key and a folded note beneath it.

Six months ago, I believed everything in my life had finally fallen into place.

I had a loving husband, Ian, our cozy home, and our bright, kind five-year-old daughter, Chloe, who filled every room with laughter and had this way of making everyone around her smile.

Then, in a single night, everything collapsed.

Ian died in a terrible car accident.

One phone call destroyed the life we had spent years putting together. I truly did not know how I was supposed to keep going, but each morning I would see Chloe and remind myself she still needed her mom, even though we both missed him with every part of our hearts.

Bit by bit, we began to shape small rituals that helped us cope with our grief.

One of those rituals came from something Ian and Chloe had always cherished doing together.

Every weekend, they would gather smooth little rocks, paint silly faces on them, and weave stories in which each rock became a tiny hero embarking on a new adventure. Chloe believed each painted rock kept a special memory they had made.

So after Ian passed away, she asked whether she could leave a painted rock on his grave every Sunday “so Daddy would never run out of adventures.”

I could not bring myself to say no.

Every Sunday, we painted a fresh little rock together and then carried it to the cemetery, and week after week, they slowly spread out to cover more and more of Ian’s grave. Somehow, seeing all those rocks there reminded me that love does not disappear simply because someone is gone.

Then, last Sunday, everything was different.

When Chloe and I arrived at Ian’s grave, we both stopped still.

Every painted rock was missing.

Except for ONE.

As Chloe lifted the last little rock, we saw a tiny brass key and a carefully folded note hidden below it.

The note made my heart stop. ⬇️
