Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels

Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups warm water (110-115°F)
1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
1 tbsp sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup baking soda (for boiling water)
1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Coarse salt, for sprinkling

Instructions:
1. Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until it starts to foam.
Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky.
2. Let the Dough Rest:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rest for 10 minutes.
3. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
4. Shape the Pretzels:
Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 20 inches), then shape into a pretzel by forming a “U,” twisting the ends, and bringing them down to the base.
5. Prepare the Baking Soda Bath:
In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Carefully add the baking soda (it will bubble up). Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheets.
6. Add the Topping:
Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
7. Bake the Pretzels:
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.
8. Cool and Serve:
Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with your favorite dips!
