DIY Mosquito Repellent Candles
Ingredients:
– 1 cup soy wax flakes or beeswax
– Candle wicks (cotton or wooden)
– Heat-safe containers (mason jars, tins, recycled tea cups)
– 20–30 drops essential oils (citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, rosemary)
– Optional: dried herbs like lavender, rosemary, or lemon balm
– Wick holders or clothespins
– Double boiler or heat-safe glass bowl over a saucepan
Directions:
1. Melt the Wax: Begin by setting up your double boiler. Fill the bottom pot with water and place it over low to medium heat. Add the soy wax flakes or beeswax to the top pot. Stir occasionally as it melts until fully liquefied.
2. Prepare the Containers: While the wax is melting, take your heat-safe containers and place the wicks in the center of each one. Use wick holders or clothespins to keep the wicks upright and centered.
3. Add Essential Oils: When the wax has melted completely and has cooled slightly to around 130–140°F, carefully remove it from heat. Add in the essential oils of your choice—an effective combination could be 10 drops citronella, 5 drops lemon eucalyptus, 5 drops lavender, 5 drops peppermint, and 5 drops rosemary. Stir well to combine.
4. Pour the Wax: With caution, pour the aromatic wax mixture into each prepared container, ensuring not to disturb the wicks. If you wish, sprinkle in some dried herbs for added decoration and a pleasant scent. Allow the candles to cool undisturbed for several hours.
5. Trim & Use: Once the candles are completely cool and have set, which typically takes about 4 to 6 hours, trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch. These candles are now ready to be lit outdoors, providing both ambiance and bug-fighting properties.
Tips & Variations:
– To enhance the effectiveness of your candles, consider using a combination of essential oils that are known to repel mosquitoes for even greater protection.
– Experiment with different containers and shapes to create unique candle designs; recycled cups or jars can add a personal touch while being eco-friendly.
