Crispy Mini Blooming Onions in Air Fryer
Ingredients:
4 small onions
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)
Salt and pepper to taste
Cooking spray
Directions:
Prepare Onions: Peel the onions and cut off the tops. Using a small paring knife, make several vertical cuts from the root end, being careful not to cut all the way through. Gently separate the layers to create a blooming effect.
Soak: Place the prepared onions in a bowl with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and season the onions.
Prepare Breading: In a shallow dish, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. In another shallow dish, mix panko breadcrumbs with grated Parmesan cheese.
Bread Onions: Remove onions from the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off. Dredge each onion in the seasoned flour, shaking off excess. Dip in buttermilk again, then coat thoroughly with the panko mixture.
Air Fry: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded onions in the basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Spray the tops with a little more cooking spray.
Cook: Air fry for 12-15 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and crispy. You may need to flip them halfway through cooking to ensure even crisping.
Serve: Remove from the air fryer and let cool slightly before serving. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
