Arrope (Grandma’s Syrup Dessert)

Arrope (Grandma’s Syrup Dessert)

Ingredients:
– 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of ripe figs or grapes
– 500 g (1.1 lbs) of sugar
– 1 cinnamon stick
– 2 cloves
– Zest of 1 lemon
– Zest of 1 orange
– 1/2 liter (2 cups) of water

Instructions:
1. **Prepare the Fruit:** Wash the figs or grapes thoroughly. If using figs, cut them into quarters. If using grapes, leave them whole.
2. **Boil the Syrup:** In a large pot, combine the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, lemon zest, and orange zest. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely.
3. **Cook the Fruit:** Add the prepared fruit to the pot. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is very soft and the syrup has thickened.
4. **Check the Consistency:** The syrup should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. If it’s still too thin, continue to simmer until it reaches the desired consistency.
5. **Cool and Store:** Remove the pot from the heat and allow the arrope to cool completely. Remove the cinnamon stick and cloves. Transfer the cooled arrope to sterilized glass jars or containers.
6. **Serve:** Arrope can be served over desserts like pancakes, ice cream, or yogurt, or enjoyed on its own as a sweet treat. Store in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
