Going on trips with our 9-year-old son, Liam, is never unplanned. Five years ago, he was left needing a wheelchair after a car accident, so even simple family outings involve serious preparation.
Yet Liam was overjoyed at the prospect of a beachfront hotel, making all the effort worthwhile.
He’s the type who makes people laugh with little effort. His jokes are awful; he finds them funnier than anyone else, and somehow he always reminds us to find gratitude in happy moments.
On our first night at the hotel, we went down for dinner.
Liam had his eyes glued to the dessert menu while Ben teased that he needed to leave some room for ice cream later.
We were enjoying ourselves.

Her gaze shifted from Liam to his wheelchair.

“Move him somewhere else! That wheelchair is ruining everyone’s meal.”
A hush spread throughout the restaurant.
For a moment, I genuinely doubted what I’d heard.
Then I checked on my son.
His smile had vanished.
Liam dropped his gaze and began poking at his food, feigning interest.
But it was clear he was struggling to hold back tears.
That was my limit.
Any patience I’d had evaporated.
I rose, met the woman’s eyes, and took an action no one anticipated.
