Crispy Mini Blooming Onions in Air Fryer
Ingredients:
4 small onions (preferably pearl onions or shallots)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
Salt and black pepper to taste
Cooking spray
Directions:
Prepare the Onions:
Peel the onions and trim the root ends, leaving the root ends intact so the layers stay together. If using pearl onions, blanch them in boiling water for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath to cool before peeling.
Prepare the Coatings:
In one shallow bowl, place the flour. Season with salt and black pepper.
In a second shallow bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and eggs.
In a third shallow bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper (if using), and additional salt and black pepper.
Bread the Onions:
Dip each onion into the flour, coating evenly and shaking off excess.
Next, dip the onion into the buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
Finally, coat the onion with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating.
Prepare the Air Fryer:
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
Air Fry the Onions:
Arrange the coated onions in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not touching to ensure even cooking. You may need to cook them in batches.
Lightly spray the onions with cooking spray to help them crisp up.
Air fry for 10-12 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and crispy, turning halfway through the cooking time.
Serve:
Remove the crispy mini blooming onions from the air fryer and let them cool slightly before serving.
Optional Dipping Sauce:
Serve with a dipping sauce such as ranch, spicy mayo, or a tangy barbecue sauce.
