Cabbage Beef Bake

Cabbage Beef Bake

Ingredients:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 small green cabbage, chopped (about 4 cups)
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
1 cup cooked rice (optional, for a heartier meal)
Olive oil for cooking

Directions:
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a little olive oil.
Brown the Beef:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of olive oil. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Cook the Onion and Garlic:
Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the beef and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
Add Seasonings and Tomatoes:
Stir in the Italian seasoning, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
Layer Cabbage and Beef:
In the prepared baking dish, spread half of the chopped cabbage evenly across the bottom. Then, layer half of the beef mixture on top of the cabbage. Repeat with the remaining cabbage and beef mixture.
Optional: Add Rice:
If you’re using rice, you can stir it into the beef mixture before layering or sprinkle it evenly between the layers for added texture and heartiness.
Bake:
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top (if using). Return to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve:
Once done, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or a dollop of sour cream for extra flavor.
