How to Make Caramelized Onions

Ingredients:
4 large onions (yellow, white, or red)
2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of sugar (optional)
2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar (optional)

Instructions:
1. Peel the onions and slice them thinly into half-moons.
2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat.
3. Add the sliced onions to the skillet, spreading them out evenly. Sprinkle with salt.
4. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes, until they start to soften and turn golden.
5. If you want to speed up the caramelization process, you can add sugar at this point. Stir the sugar into the onions.
6. Continue cooking the onions over medium-low heat, stirring every few minutes, for about 30-40 minutes. The onions will gradually turn a deep brown color.
7. If using balsamic vinegar, add it during the last 5 minutes of cooking, stirring to coat the onions.
8. Once the onions are caramelized to your liking, remove them from the heat and let them cool slightly before serving.
