Monte Cristo sandwich
Ingredients:
8 slices of bread (white or brioche works best)
4 slices of cooked ham
4 slices of turkey (or chicken)
4 slices of Swiss or Gruyère cheese
4 large eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Butter (for frying)
Powdered sugar (for serving, optional)
Raspberry or strawberry jam (for serving, optional)
Instructions:
1. Assemble the Sandwich:
Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean surface.
Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each slice of bread, followed by a slice of ham and a slice of turkey.
Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and finish with the remaining 4 slices of bread to create 4 sandwiches.
2. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper until well combined.
3. Dip the Sandwiches:
Carefully dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, allowing the bread to soak up some of the mixture. Make sure to coat both sides well but avoid letting them get too soggy.
4. Fry the Sandwiches:
In a large skillet or griddle, heat a generous amount of butter over medium heat.
Once the butter is melted and bubbling, place the dipped sandwiches in the skillet. Cook until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes on each side. You may need to add more butter as you cook the sandwiches.
5. Serve:
Once the sandwiches are cooked, remove them from the skillet and let them drain on a paper towel for a moment to remove excess grease.
If desired, dust the sandwiches with powdered sugar for a sweet touch.
Serve hot with raspberry or strawberry jam for dipping.
