Someone mocked my mother’s weight loudly, prompting the chef to come out and stop beside her.

It had been months since my mother last dined out.

Years avoiding restaurants because of UNKIND comments about her weight kept her away, but for her sixty-fifth birthday, she finally agreed to join us.

Her favorite Italian eatery was where we went.

Nothing extravagant.

Just great food and a reputation for kindness.

For the first hour, everything went flawlessly.

Mom was laughing.

She ordered tiramisu ahead of her meal.

She even remarked:

“Maybe I should do this more often.”

Then, suddenly, it changed.

A woman at the next table sized up my mother.

Loud enough for everyone nearby, she sneered:

“Maybe SKIP DESSERT this time.”

The restaurant grew SILENT.

My mom’s joy faded at once.

She quietly grabbed her purse.

“I think we should go.”

Before I could reply, the woman laughed again.

“You’ll thank me later.”

I got up.

“So is BULLYING strangers your main interest?”

She only rolled her eyes.

“Someone has to tell the TRUTH.”

Suddenly…

the kitchen DOORS banged open.

The chef appeared in the dining area.

He didn’t bring any plates.

There was no joy on his face.

He walked directly to my mother’s side.

A pause followed.

Then he fixed his gaze on the woman, face PALE.

In a low voice:

“YOU NEED TO LEAVE. RIGHT NOW.”

She laughed in response.

“And WHO are you to tell me that?”

My heart skipped.

The chef simply looked at a waiter and said:

“LOCK THE FRONT DOOR.”
