My ex-husband’s fiancée put my 9-year-old daughter in an oversized boy’s suit instead of the flower girl dress promised to her—the response from my ex-FIL left the bride stunned.
Three years have passed since my ex-husband, Patrick, and I divorced.
Good co-parenting between us has revolved around our daughter.
Hazel.
Hazel was delighted when Patrick got engaged to Vanessa.
“I’ve always dreamed of a friend as beautiful as Vanessa,” she admitted to me in a whisper.
Vanessa never shared Hazel’s excitement.
Hazel’s attempts to be included were ignored by Vanessa.
Anyone calling Hazel her stepdaughter was corrected by Vanessa:
“Patrick’s daughter.”
Nonetheless…
Hazel never stopped trying.
She created birthday cards for Vanessa, picked wildflowers, and even used her allowance for a tiny silver bracelet.
Patrick eventually announced the wedding date.
Unexpectedly, Vanessa grinned at Hazel,
“I want you to be my flower girl.”
Hazel was nearly overwhelmed with joy.
For months she practiced scattering petals down the hallway and marked days on the calendar.
A week before the ceremony Hazel asked about her dress.
Vanessa only laughed,
“Don’t worry. I already bought the perfect one.”
On the wedding day, about twenty minutes before the event, Vanessa had Hazel come into the bridal suite alone.
When she came back…
She was not in the flower girl dress she’d pictured for months, but an oversized navy suit for boys.
The jacket went to her knees, sleeves covered her hands.
“What happened?” I asked.
Hazel’s lips shook.
“Vanessa said there isn’t a flower girl anymore.”
“She said I’m from Daddy’s side…”
“… so I should look like a best man.”
At this moment, Patrick’s father entered.
He silently took in Hazel’s outfit and left.
Ten minutes later, as the ceremony commenced, he returned to Vanessa.
What he pulled from under his jacket caused Vanessa to erupt with, “WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE?!” ⬇️
