My dad met my fiancé for the first time at the wedding — as soon as he saw him, his face lost all color and he exclaimed, “How can it be you? I was sure YOU DISAPPEARED 30 YEARS AGO!”

I imagined my wedding day would be filled with tears of joy. Walking down the aisle with my father was everything I had hoped for.

He raised me by himself. My mom vanished when I was a child, and Dad never once complained.

From braiding my hair before school to working nights, sitting next to me when I had a fever, he always promised:

“Your life will be better than mine. I’ll do everything to make sure of it.”

Julian, my fiancé, had only interacted with my dad a handful of times via patchy video calls. Living overseas for the past three years meant the connection was rarely stable.

Before the ceremony, Dad fell ill with a fever and couldn’t attend the rehearsal dinner.

“I’ll see him tomorrow, when I walk you down the aisle,” he said, smiling. “That’s how it’s meant to be.”

At the church entrance, I could hear my dress brushing the floor, the scent of roses in the air, and my father’s unsteady breathing.

Julian was waiting ahead. Tall, composed, in a sleek black suit, he offered a smile.

Suddenly Dad halted.

His grip tightened painfully on my arm. He stepped backward, and I steadied him.

“Dad?” I murmured. “Are you okay?”

The music stopped. Even the candle flames seemed to grow still.

Dad’s gaze was fixed on Julian.

“No…” he whispered. “No, this can’t be.”

Julian’s smile vanished.

Dad’s hand, shaking, raised toward him.

“HOW CAN IT BE YOU? I WAS SURE YOU DISAPPEARED 30 YEARS AGO!” His voice echoed throughout the church.

I felt the ground slip away under my feet.

“Do you two know each other?” escaped my lips.

Dad uttered a name unfamiliar to me.

Julian fixed his eyes on me.

“It’s too late to change anything. NOW YOU CAN FINALLY LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY I’M MARRYING YOU.” ⬇️
