My mother-in-law routinely entered our bedroom and searched my underwear drawer on every visit — so one day, I decided to set a trap she wouldn’t anticipate.
After marrying Austin, I became aware that his mother, Kathryn, had little respect for personal boundaries.
She would open cupboards uninvited, organize my things, and walk into rooms as if they were hers.
I tried not to pay attention.
But I started to see something even more troubling.
After each visit from Kathryn, my underwear drawer looked rearranged. The folding was different, and some pieces were out of place or in the wrong drawer.
Once it occurred a few times, I was sure I wasn’t just imagining things.
I talked to Austin about it, wanting him to understand how it felt, but he barely responded, simply saying,
“She’s my mother. If she wants to check that you’re taking proper care of our home, she has every right to.”
I was shocked by his attitude.
At that point, I realized my privacy meant nothing to either Kathryn or Austin.
The next time Kathryn visited, I welcomed her with a smile and acted as if nothing was unusual.
I watched her go down the hallway toward our bedroom.
This time, though, I had prepared for exactly this moment the night before.
Not long after, I heard her shouting my name from upstairs.
Austin and I rushed to the bedroom. ⬇️
