I accidentally opened a beach changing cubicle while trying to find my six-year-old son—what I heard my “perfect” MIL whisper in there made my blood run cold.

Every summer, my husband’s parents rented the same little Gulf Coast beach house for all of us.

My mother-in-law, Cheryl, was the picture-perfect grandmother everyone admired.

She never forgot a single birthday.

She knitted a brand-new sweater for our son Nathan every Christmas.

Every Wednesday, she picked him up from kindergarten and spoiled him with homemade pancakes before taking him home.

He absolutely doted on her.

Whenever anyone asked who his favorite person was, he’d break into a grin and say,

“Grandma.”

Last Saturday, we were all spending the day at the beach.

My husband and father-in-law were on the pier, fishing side by side.

The cousins were constructing a gigantic sandcastle.

I took my eyes off everything for what honestly couldn’t have been more than ten minutes.

When I turned back…

Nathan was gone.

At first, I didn’t feel any real fear.

I thought he must have trotted off with Cheryl to buy ice cream.

I checked the snack stand.

The playground.

The public showers.

Still nothing.

Then I saw a beach changing cubicle with its curtain hanging slightly open.

A pair of tiny blue sandals jutted out from underneath.

Nathan’s.

I went over, already ready to joke about him hiding from Mommy.

I gently drew the curtain to the side.

Neither of them noticed my presence.

Cheryl was kneeling down in front of my son.

She was carefully sliding something into the front pocket of his little shark backpack.

Then she held his cheeks between both hands.

Her voice came out in a near-whisper.

“Now tell Grandma what we agreed.”

Nathan nodded, his expression turning very serious.

“Mommy can NEVER know what you gave me.”

Cheryl’s smile widened.

“That’s my good boy.”

I felt the blood drain out of my face.

I jerked Nathan behind me and grabbed hold of his backpack.

Cheryl reached for me in a panic.

“Don’t!” she shouted.

I unzipped the front pocket anyway.

The second I laid eyes on what she had tucked away inside…

I SCREAMED. ⬇️
