My stepmom mocked the prom dress my younger brother sewed for me using jeans from our late mom — but karma intervened.
“Prom dresses are a ridiculous waste of money.”
She barely glanced up from her phone as she said it.
I lingered in the kitchen, holding a school flyer detailing prom deadlines. I’d rehearsed my request several times.
“Mom left money for things like this,” I murmured.
Carla laughed.
“That money covers household expenses now,” she replied. “And seriously? Nobody wants to see you prancing around in an overpriced princess dress.”
She tossed her brand-new designer handbag on the kitchen counter, store tag still attached.
My dad passed away last year after a sudden heart attack. Since then, Carla has managed every penny in the house, including the funds left by my mom for me and my brother.
So there would be no dress, no prom.
I went to my room, trying not to cry.
My brother Noah heard it all.
He’s fifteen. He took a sewing class last year because the woodworking shop was full.
Other boys mocked him for months.
After that, he never spoke of it again.
One night, he knocked on my door, carrying a stack of Mom’s old jeans.
Mom used to keep them.
“You trust me?” Noah asked.
For two weeks, we transformed the kitchen into a workspace.
The dress he created was amazing.
Various shades of blue pieced together, like fragments of Mom’s life.
On prom morning, Carla saw it and burst into laughter.
“That’s the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen,” she said. “If you wear it, everyone will laugh at you.”
Still, I wore the dress.
Because my brother made it, and each piece was a part of Mom.
Carla appeared at prom, her phone ready, whispering to other parents about wanting to capture my “fashion disaster.”
As I stepped onto the stage, music suddenly stopped.
The principal approached Carla in the crowd, microphone in hand.
He signaled to the cameraman.
“Zoom in on THIS woman,” he said. “Because I think I know her…” ⬇️
