🍫🥥 German Chocolate Poke Cake 😋

German Chocolate Poke Cake

A Rich, Moist, Caramel-Soaked Dessert with Classic Southern Charm

German Chocolate Poke Cake is one of those desserts that absolutely never fails to impress. It’s gooey, sweet, buttery, nutty, and full of that signature chocolate flavor that makes everyone abandon their diet the moment they take one bite. Whether you’re bringing dessert to a potluck, making something special for a birthday, or just want a comforting treat to enjoy after dinner, this poke cake delivers every single time.

What makes it so special?
The magic happens after the cake bakes — you poke holes all over it and pour over a mixture of sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce. This soaks into every inch of the warm cake, creating the most moist, melt-in-your-mouth texture you can imagine. Top it with pecans, coconut, or your favorite frosting, and you have a dessert that tastes like hours of work but comes together in minutes.

If you love rich chocolate, creamy caramel, and ultra-moist cakes… this one’s a keeper!

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix

  • 1 1/2 cups water

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 3 large eggs

For the Filling

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

For the Topping

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  • Optional: 1 cup shredded coconut

  • Optional: whipped topping or chocolate frosting

Directions

1. Prepare the Cake

Start by preheating your oven according to the temperature on your cake mix box — usually around 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
In a bowl, combine the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Pour it into your prepared baking dish and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

2. Poke the Cake

As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, it’s time for the “poke” part. Use the handle end of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake. You want the holes wide enough for the condensed milk and caramel to seep in fully.

3. Pour the Filling On Top

In a separate bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce. Slowly pour this mixture over the warm cake, allowing it to settle into each hole. The cake will begin absorbing the filling almost instantly, making it extra moist and decadent.

4. Add the Toppings

Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the top of the cake. If you love coconut, add shredded coconut as well — it gives a more traditional German chocolate flavor profile.
Let the cake cool completely before slicing so everything sets properly.

5. Serve and Enjoy

Once chilled or cooled to room temperature, slice into squares and dig in. Every bite will be rich, gooey, chocolatey, and filled with caramel sweetness.
