  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs, room temperature

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup whole milk, room temperature

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

🍯 Old-Fashioned Caramel Icing

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)

  • ¼ cup whole milk or heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2–3 cups powdered sugar (adjust for thickness)


👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.


2️⃣ Mix Dry Ingredients

  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.


3️⃣ Cream Butter & Sugar

  • Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (4–5 minutes).

  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.


4️⃣ Combine

  • Add dry ingredients alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour.

  • Stir in vanilla extract.


5️⃣ Bake

  • Divide batter evenly between pans.

  • Bake 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  • Cool in pans 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks.


6️⃣ Make the Caramel Icing

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Stir in brown sugar and milk.

  3. Bring to a gentle boil and cook 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly.

  4. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla.

  5. Whisk in powdered sugar until thick but pourable.


7️⃣ Frost the Cake
