Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • Pink and blue food coloring (optional, for a cotton candy effect)

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 4 cups powdered sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2–4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk

  • Pink and blue food coloring

  • Mini cotton candy pieces, for garnish

Directions

1. Prepare the Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3–4 minutes).

  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

  6. Optional: Divide the batter into two bowls and tint one pink and the other blue for a cotton candy swirl effect. Gently fold colors together in the pans for a marbled look.

  7. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and smooth the tops.

  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  9. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

2. Make the Frosting

  1. In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy.

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well.

  3. Stir in vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Add more cream if needed to reach a smooth, spreadable consistency.

  4. Tint frosting with pink and blue food coloring to achieve a soft cotton candy look.

3. Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a thick layer of frosting on top.

  2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake evenly.

  3. Decorate with small tufts of mini cotton candy on top. Avoid placing cotton candy directly on frosting for long periods, as it may melt.
